Taking the T-bane (metro) Line 1 up to Frognerseteren in Oslo functions as a major sightseeing attraction because the 30-to-40-minute journey climbs from the city center to a panoramic viewpoint 469 meters above sea level.

The Metro Journey (Holmenkollbanen)

  • Route: Take Line 1 (Frognerseteren) from downtown stations like Stortinget or Nationaltheatret.

  • The Experience: The tracks wind up through residential hills and dense pine forests, offering sweeping, elevated views over the Oslofjord and the cityscape.

  • Ticket Info: Covered entirely by an ordinary Zone 1 Ruter ticket (costing 3,80 NOK to 42 NOK depending on single ticket vs. 24-hour pass), requiring no special surcharge.

  • Elevation: The terminal station sits at the edge of the wilderness, creating the greatest elevation change in a single continuous urban transit line in the world.

What to Do at Frognerseteren Station

  • Frognerseteren Restaurant: A historic, dragon-style timber building from 1891 located a short walk from the platform. It serves traditional Norwegian fare, hot chocolate, and famous giant slices of apple cake.

  • Panoramic Viewpoint: Directly outside the restaurant lies one of the finest unobstructed lookouts facing Oslo and the inner fjord.

  • Gateway to Nordmarka: The station opens straight into Nordmarka, Oslo's vast northern forest. Popular activities include hiking trails in summer or cross-country skiing in winter, such as the trail leading toward Holmenkollen ski jump or onward to Sognsvann
