Kolsåstoppen

Kolsåstoppen stands as one of the most rewarding natural balconies on the western rim of the Oslo region, offering an unparalleled panoramic vista over the capital and the glistening Oslofjord.

Situated just 12 kilometers outside Oslo’s city core in neighboring Bærum, this prominent, ancient volcanic ridge consists of two distinct peaks: Nordre (North) Kolsås at 379 meters and Søndre (South) Kolsås at 342 meters. Enveloped within a strictly protected Kolsåstoppen Nature Reserve, this destination perfectly blends a gratifying, pine-scented forest ascent with high-reward alpine geometry, making it a beloved favorite for hikers, rock climbers, and photography enthusiasts alike.

🗺️ The Hiking Routes & Trail Breakdown

There are two primary approaches to conquering the ridges of Kolsåstoppen, each offering a distinct pace and experience:

Option 1: The Classic Traverse from Stein Gård (The Scenic Route)

  • Distance & Duration: ~7.4 km roundtrip • 2 to 2.5 hours.

  • Difficulty: Moderate to moderately challenging.

  • The Experience: The trail begins across the road from the historic Stein Gård Farm, initially charting a wide, gentle gravel path parallel to Gamle Ringeriksvei. Following the blue trail markers north-west into the canopy, the forest deepens as you begin a sustained climb towards the mirror-like waters of Setertjern Lake—an idyllic, hidden forest oasis perfect for a refreshing summer dip.

  • Continuing past the lake, the trail directs you to the dramatic Søndre Kolsåstoppen. Steep, rocky, and punchy inclines are cleverly mitigated by rustic handrails and natural stone Sherpa stairs to ensure secure footing. Reaching the southern crown rewards you with an expansive view where the metropolitan skyline of Oslo, the majestic Holmenkollen Ski Jump, and the islands of the Oslofjord sprawl dramatically beneath your boots.

Option 2: The Direct Ascent from Hauger Station (The Fast & Family-Friendly Route)

  • Distance & Duration: ~6 km roundtrip • 45 minutes to 1 hour each way.

  • Difficulty: Moderate.

  • The Experience: This shorter, time-efficient alternative cuts straight to the core ascent. Starting from the base, you track a wide footpath through the Dælivannet conservation area before the trail transforms into a rugged, ascending mountain path. While it features a brief, exhilarating hands-on scramble over polished bedrock near the final summit, the inclusion of stone stairways makes it highly accessible for families and casual walkers seeking a swift nature escape.

🚊 Journey Logistics: Reaching the Trailhead

Uniquely positioned on the threshold of the wilderness, Kolsåstoppen is exceptionally easy to reach via Oslo's public transit network or private vehicle.

  • 🚇 By Public Transport (T-Bane & Bus):

    • To Hauger (For Option 2): Board the Line 3 T-Bane (Metro) westbound from central stations like Nationaltheatret or Jernbanetorget directly to the Hauger terminus. From the platform, follow the clear directional signage leading up the hillside road toward the start of the footpath.

    • To Stein Gård (For Option 1): Take the Line 3 T-Bane to Bekkestua, then transfer seamlessly to Bus 150 (bound for Gullhaug), disembarking directly at the Stein Gård transit stop.

    By Car:

    • Navigate westward out of Oslo via E18, transitioning onto Route 160 or Route 168 towards Bærum.

    • Dedicated public parking is available directly at the Stein Gård parking lot (located directly opposite the main farm entrance), or in the commuter bays adjacent to the Hauger Subway Station.
