University Aula

The University of Oslo's Aula offers music and art in beautiful surroundings.

Experience Edvard Munch's unique Aula decorations in text and images.

The world-famous paintings in the University Aula tell stories of the university and the sciences – and of the sun as a symbol of life and creative forces.

They offer an intimate and monumental experience of Edvard Munch's characteristic imagery and use of colours, and hang in the very spot where Munch organised and painted them over a hundred years ago.

The art in the Aula

Edvard Munch completed his Aula paintings in 1916, and they have decorated the walls of the Aula ever since. "The Sun", "Alma Mater" and "History" are the most famous.

In Munch's own time the paintings were controversial, today they are considered a national treasure that many people come by to enjoy.

Visiting the Aula

The University Aula is open for events and concerts. It is possible to visit the Aula for free on selected Saturdays. See the Aula's website to find a date.
