National Museum- Architecture
Set on historic Bankplassen in the heart of Oslo, the National Museum – Architecture is a refined and thought-provoking destination for anyone interested in how buildings shape the way we live, move and understand the city around us.
The museum is located at Bankplassen, and the architecture combines Grosch’s former bank building with Sverre Fehn’s later pavilion; the museum’s architecture collection includes models, drawings and photographs. Photo: Helge Høifødt - public domain
Housed in a remarkable architectural meeting between past and present, the museum brings together Christian Heinrich Grosch’s elegant 19th-century former bank building and a modern pavilion by Sverre Fehn, one of Norway’s most celebrated architects. The result is a place where architecture is not only displayed, but experienced — through light, materials, proportions, history and ideas.
Inside, visitors can explore changing exhibitions dedicated to architecture, urban development, design culture and the built environment. Models, drawings, photographs and archival material open up stories about Norwegian and international architecture, from historic landmarks to contemporary questions about cities, homes, public space and sustainability.
More intimate than Oslo’s larger museum venues, the National Museum – Architecture offers a quieter, more focused cultural experience. It is ideal for architecture enthusiasts, design lovers, curious travellers and anyone who wants to see Oslo through a deeper lens. A visit here pairs beautifully with a walk through Kvadraturen, a stop at Bankplassen, or a wider cultural route through the city centre and the waterfront.

About the National Museum architecture collection
The National Museum – Architecture is a destination in itself. The museum building is a combination of classicism and modernism – a meeting between Christian Heinrich Grosch (1801–1865) and Sverre Fehn (1924–2009), two central architects in Norwegian art history.
The collection includes drawings and photographic documentation, models and other objects.
This is Norway's largest architecture collection and consists of more than 300,000 artefacts, dating from the 1830's and up until today.
Important architects whose works are in the collection are: Ove Bang, Blakstad & Munthe-Kaas, Wenche Selmer, Jan & Jon, Knut Knutsen, Arne Korsmo, Christian Norberg-Schulz, Magnus Poulsson, Erling Viksjø and Sverre Fehn.
