Illuminated Bicycles at Barcode

The illuminated bicycles at Barcode in Oslo are a distinctive combination of functional bicycle racks and a permanent urban art installation, located along the so-called “Sykkelstripa” (The Bicycle Strip) beside Barcode Building B11.

What it is

The installation consists of 52 stylised, bright-yellow bicycle racks, each shaped like a racing bicycle. Arranged in a continuous line, the racks create the impression of a cycle lane or a peloton of racing cyclists passing through the city.

The lights

As darkness falls, integrated lights in the front and rear lamps of the yellow bicycle sculptures illuminate. The effect transforms the installation after sunset, creating a striking and highly recognisable feature within the urban landscape.

Who created it

The area was designed by MAD Arkitekter together with landscape architects Grindaker. The installation does not have a separate formal or abstract art title; it is officially referred to as “Sykkelstripa”, meaning “The Bicycle Strip”.

Address and Location

The illuminated bicycles are located in one of the passages running through the Barcode development in Bjørvika.

• Address: Between Dronning Eufemias gate 18 and 22, 0191 Oslo

• Exact location: The bicycle racks are positioned in the narrow Passasje B11-C, between the MAD building (the residential building in the centre) and the Visma building to the west.

The passage provides a convenient pedestrian shortcut between Dronning Eufemias gate to the south and Trelastgata to the north, while the row of brightly coloured bicycles gives this otherwise functional urban passage a distinctive artistic identity.
